Due to the well-behaved traffic on the day we

were able to chat to a couple of the Traffic Officers. Equipped with a Land Rover Discovery, towing gear, lights, cones and signs, they provide incident support and emergency traffic management, clearing hazards and moving stricken motorists to safety as soon as possible. Returning to Godstone Vineyard we enjoyed a lunch of cheese and biscuits and a piping-hot, tasty pudding with tea and coffee. We are immensely grateful to the Vineyard for their kind- ness in letting our members use their car park as there was little parking available at our destination.

from your sell-out audience of over 200 Brooklands Trust Members. Once your victim... er... volunteer has been selected, ask her to sit on a seat on the stage and hold a bottle of water above her head. The bottle has dozens of small holes drilled in its bottom and the water doesn’t come out... until you unscrew the top that is! Air pressure pushes the water out and all over our lucky volunteer’s head – luckily Nick Arnold had prepared her with a comedy shower cap! That was just one of the wacky experiments he carried out on stage at the BTM family event to demonstrate scientific principles.

Nick is the author of nearly 50 Horrible Science books which concentrate on the more gruesome aspects of science – just right for your youngster. Such titles as Bulging Brains, Disgusting Digestion and Vicious Veg give you some idea of the direc- tion that Nick’s books take. It is ‘science with the squidgy bits left in,’ and also displays an amazing affection for alliteration. For our event Nick con- centrated on ‘Frightful Flight’ and ‘Powerful Cars’ in a special show tailored to our young Brooklands audience. He looked at early flight and motor racing, starting with the Wright Brothers and Karl and Bertha Benz. Nick was particularly pleased to be given a short tour of the Museum prior to his show and see the Vimy and

So, a satisfying end to an interesting visit. Highways England provided an informative, entertaining and thought-provoking day which gave an excellent insight into the work, problems and pressures involved in trying to keep our roads safe and the traffic moving.
