1954 XK120 SE.

Another Browns Lane tribute was the magnifi- cent 1954 XK120 SE that fully justified its £125,000 price, whilst an original unrestored 1962 E-type Series 1 roadster was understandably the focus of strong bidding, settling well over- estimate at £145,600. 11 of of the 13 classic Jaguars on offer went to new homes.

For aficionados of the original Mini, a super-

rare Morris Mini Cooper 970 S was a magnet and so it proved during bidding, the immaculate and superbly-prepared car settling on £56,000.

And for sheer rarity value, there was no beating the one-off 2012 AC Zagato 348 GT prototype, entered into the auction by Brooklands Cars. This sure-fire investment – bearing the legendary crest

of Ugo Zagato on its swooping bodywork – sold for a heady £134,000.

The Mercedes-Benz marque has always featured

strongly at Historics auctions and it was no different here, with a clean sweep of all 12 models on offer passing to new owners on the day. The ex-Michael Crawford 2004 S500 was especially notable for its quality and interest level and a very desirable, powder blue 1969 280SL didn't disappoint its owner, returning a well over estimate £58,240.

The next auction takes place on 20th May at a new location – Ascot Racecourse, but Historics will be back at the Museum on 8th July. Edward Bridger-Stille
