Pocono Mountains CvB showcase

“In the corporate sales world, it can be dif- ficult to get in front of these very busy planners, so an opportunity to meet face- to-face on an intimate level is worth its weight in gold… Our Pocono team made a great impression! Sign me up for the next event,” declares Elaine Leies, corpo- rate sales manager for Camelback Lodge.

“I thought the time we spent with each person was invaluable… we met many qualified meeting candidates. In addition to getting the meeting contacts, we got the chance to spread the word of all that the Pocono Mountains and our individual properties have to offer... I definitely see value in doing these types of events in future, and would love to be a part of it again,” says Matt Butler, corporate sales manager for Woodloch Resort.

Some glowing praise, certainly! It seems as though these exhibitors have been very happy with their return on investment with regard to participating in these shows. However, do these roadshows mean as much to the attendees? It cer- tainly seems that way.

In a message to the Pocono Mountains CVB after a roadshow event, Janine M. Owen, chief education officer for the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) and the PAFP Founda- tion states, “Everything was great, and such a nice thing for all of you to do. We as planners greatly appreciate the expense and time you all take to do these types of things. Not that we have these expectations - we don’t. But they are always fun! If you would please extend my appreciation to all vendors present, that’d be great.”

Another, Mary A. Costik, CMP, meeting manager for the Pennsylvania Municipal League / PennPRIME / APMM, told the CVB, “You and your staff did an amazing job organizing and implementing the event! I love how the luncheon flows and that everyone gets their time in the sun.”

Finally, from Nancy Waxman, executive assistant to the dean, Penn Law at the University of Pennsylvania, “A long over- due thank you for your visit last month. What an incredible group of resorts and people. You obviously have a wonderful world to represent and you do it well. The goodie bag was amazing. Thank you. I hope to visit in person.”

The roadshows offer benefits to both sup- pliers and attendees, and they certainly seem to be well thought of by both. In addition, they appear to bring forth yet another, albeit unexpected, benefit. These roadshows have a tendency to forge friendships and relationships not just between property representatives and potential clients, but also between exhibit- ing companies who are technically com- peting at these roadshows for the same business.

“Amazingly,” observes David Jackson of the Pocono Mountains CVB, “the sales efforts only strengthen the bonds between competing properties. Each sales repre- sentative gets to learn about other proper- ties while also building relationships. I think it is important for planners to see destinations working together in support of their incoming meetings and events.”

By working together to create these types of roadshow events, forecasting success for all involved seems like a good possi- bility. Planners, suppliers and the destina- tion as a whole have a lot to gain by attending and exhibit at these shows.

Their roadshows are great starting points for establishing new rela- tionships, and serve as outstand- ing opportunities for learning about so much of what the Pocono Mountains Region has to offer for meetings and events.
