Two dog events that have become the dog equiva- lent to Tampa’s annual Gasparilla Parade were held in January. The 7th Annual Barkarilla & Pirate Pooch Parade was held on January 7 at The Dirty Shame in Ybor City. It was hosted by Ye Krewe of Samuel Bellamy to raise money for Tampa’s Animal Based Charities. The following weekend, the Krewe of Alegria hosted the 6th annual Cutest Pirate Dog Contest to benefit the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and Kickin’ For Kids. The New Barker was the media sponsor for both events and Charlotte Reed with The Pet Buzz Talk Radio was the emcee.

More than a thousand people attended the January 14th Take Me Home Adoption event at the North Florida Fairgrounds. There were local business vendors, veterinarians, food ven- dors, hot air balloon rides, and demonstrations of agility, obedience and barn hunt activities for the animals. In addition, thirteen animal rescue groups participated by bringing lots of loving, healthy animals for adoption. A total of 28 ani- mals were adopted the day of the event with another 18 pending applications. As we experi- enced at the past four annual “Take Me

Home” Pet Adoption events, people who did not find the family pet they were looking for will be reaching out to local rescue groups and shelters and hopefully adopting. “All of this was made possible, in part,

because of your support,” said Grayce S. Berman, volunteer Secretary of North Florida Rescue Inc. “Thank you for helping to make a difference for pets & people in our community. Next year we’re looking forward to partnering with you again on another wonderful event.” TakeMeHomePetAdoption.com
