This is what Mac looked like when he was owner-surrendered to the SPCA Florida in Lakeland back in January.
Everything was set. Mac would soon be heading to the K9s For Warriors cam- pus to begin his training. After the Grand Slam event, representatives from K9s for Warriors were scheduled to meet with Mac for an initial evaluation. For whatever rea- son, though, Mac
did not make a good impression. Or maybe it was the other way around. In any case, Connie offered to spend a little more time with Mac, and a second evaluation would be considered. In the meantime, Mac went to an off-site event repre-
senting the SPCA Florida and caught the attention of a Lakeland resident. Since Mac was still on the adoptable list, he was adopted that very same day by the young man. Anyone who has worked with dogs, especially shelter dogs, knows one thing for sure. Dogs will let us know what they want and what they don’t want, if we’re watching and listening. “I think the life of a

service dog wasn’t what Mac wanted. He knew there was someone out there who needed him in another capacity, and that someone is Abel. Mac was the one putting that for- ward the day of his evalua- tion, and also on the day he met Abel,” said Connie. Kate, Justin and Christy,
Kate’s sister, all wanted what was best for Mac and were
happy to hear about his adoption. They will continue to work with the SPCA Florida to find a dog for K9s for Warriors.
