When they adopted Franklin in 2003 from the SPCA of Central Florida (now Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando), hus- band and wife team Monisha Seth and Anthony Douglas had no idea how much he would impact their lives and change the face of Central Florida animal welfare. Monisha and Anthony had just finished their medical training in Philadelphia and moved back to Orlando (where they met at UCF in 1992) to open their internal medicine practices. Although Monisha grew up afraid of dogs, Anthony showed her the uncondition- al love that pets provide. She looked forward to adopting her first dog. Monisha and Anthony were so grateful to the agency for sheltering Franklin prior to his adoption that they decided to gather a handful of their pet-lov- ing friends and create a team named “Franklin’s Friends” to raise money for the Wiggle Waggle Walk fundraiser. That first year they raised a little
more than $500. Each subsequent year, the group grew larger and raised more money. In 2012, Franklin’s Friends became a 501(c)(3) non profit

organization so they could support more than just one local animal welfare agency. Since their inception Franklin’s Friends has grown from a small casual group of animal loving friends to a formal organization of more than two hundred volunteers and their four legged companions. Franklin’s Friends’ mission is to support Central Florida
animal welfare by fundraising for local nonprofit and govern- ment agencies that are dedicated to Shelter/Rescue, Spay/Neuter, or Community Education programs. The organ- ization raises money throughout the year and then, through a rigorous application process, grants those funds to deserving organizations. Last year Franklin’s Friends raised more than $132,000 for Central Florida animal welfare. On April 8, 2017, Franklin’s Friends celebrated raising their millionth dollar for local animal welfare at their fourth annual Unleashed. Uncorked. Unframed. fundraiser at the Orlando Science Center. Monisha and Anthony commented, “Although Franklin is
no longer with us, we take great solace and are so proud of the legacy that he has left behind.” Franklin’s Friends looks forward to raising several more million dollars for Central Florida ani- mal welfare in the years to come.
