Perhaps something about this man’s appearance or demeanor reminded him of his previous owner – the one who abused him, tied him to a tree and aban- doned him. That fear was so embedded in Buddy that his reaction to similar- looking men never fully dissipated. Yet, by redirecting him and rewarding him for listening to me and engaging in alternate behaviors, he learned that pay- ing attention to me was worth more than paying attention to those men. Once Buddy was healthy and stable,
I contacted the Rottweiler rescue group and suggested he was ready to be adopt- ed. The rescue group agreed, so we went about the task of marketing him to potential adopters. It only took a few weeks to find a great fit. A recently retired couple whose home had a fenced-in yard, were looking for a companion to go on walks with and basically spoil. After Buddy was adopted, I occa-
sionally checked in with the adopters to see how things were going. They said what most owners of older Rottweilers say: “He’s a big, sweet, loving, couch potato.” Buddy brought them a joy they wouldn’t have experienced if he hadn’t been given a second chance with patient, positive training. Buddy now enjoys long walks by the ocean, playing with his toys, and snuggling with his appreciative owners. Dog training by certified profes-
sionals can really make the difference between the life and death of a dog, so please consult with one if you are unsure of what to do with a dog who may not be exhibiting the behaviors you desire. Also, always ask for the credentials of a potential dog trainer to ensure that they are certified and verify their experience by checking references.
