HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GROOM MY DOG? Thunder, a two-year-old standard Poodle, visits Fluffy Puppies every week. “His routine is bath, bath, then a full groom,” said Alex, his groomer. “Additionally, Thunder’s parents really understand the importance of brushing regularly in between grooming,” said Alex.

bring the boys in for a bath. They love their groomer Ariella,” said their human. Ariella started bathing dogs and help- ing around the salon at Fluffy Puppies.

One of the main reasons Thunder

receive a weekly bath is that when he relieves himself, he soils the coat on his front legs, staining the fur. Alex works on this every week, gently trimming Thunder’s fur, ever so slightly, so as not to affect the shape of his total groom. “Many pet parents are becoming

more attuned to the importance of keep- ing their dogs on a regular grooming schedule. The dogs become more accli- mated and learn to enjoy the attention. Like our own self-grooming schedules, we pay attention to the needs of our hair and skin. It’s just as important with a dog,” said Alex. “Also, if your dog is trained to enjoy bathing and grooming, the experience will be a pleasant one.” Good grooming will not only keep

your dog’s fur in good health, but also reduce the amount of hair shedding in your home.Frequent bathing will usually not dry out the dog’s skin or coat if the proper shampoo is used. Organic sham- poos containing natural oils are safe to use whenever needed. Many are specially for- mulated to encourage frequent bathing. Holistic veterinarians have discovered that when patients are bathed frequently, using properly selected shampoos, they usually do not need conventional medications to treat their skin diseases. Even when they do, they require much less medication. Two other sweet dogs who receive regu- lar baths and TLC are Bubbles and Tank. “Sundays are the best days for me to

“Grooming is my art. I love the look on a client’s face, whose dog I just groomed,” said Alex, who has 10 years experience in grooming. She just finished grooming Thunder.

When she realized how much fun it was working around dogs, she attended the Tampa Bay Area Pet Grooming Academy to learn how to become a professional groomer. “I love my work,” Ariella said.
