ISPE Spring Seminar Success About ISPE

The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers was set up in 1978 to establish an organisation for the individual swimming pool engineer (no corporate membership) to:

• Foster a professional approach to the design, installation and maintenance of swimming pools, enclosures and all ancillary equipment;

• Give recognition to technical skill and ability;

ABOVE: ISPE’s 115th One-Day Seminar took place in March and welcomed more than 40 delegates.

Over 40 delegates attended ISPE’s 115th One-Day Seminar in March and many of those present later said what an informative and enjoyable day it was. The Institute was delighted to welcome Steve Baker from Solus, who gave a RIBA-approved CPD presentation on slip-resistant tiles and the grades that should be used in different applications, including some of the testing requirements for different products.

Later in the day, Shaun Howarth from Ardex UK, outlined best practice and guidance on tiling in wet leisure areas and considered the impact of tiles, backgrounds, water chemistry and fi nished environments, on the waterproofi ng, adhesive and grout specifi cation. It is hoped both Solus and Ardex UK will host further CPD presentations for ISPE members and others in the pool and spa trade and more details will be announced later in the year.

FULL SCHEDULE

Other subjects covered in a very full day included concrete pool construction, where Ian Betts, FISPE, spoke about the latest relevant European and British Standards, and John Cheek, FISPE, together with structural engineer, Colin Game, from Millard and Partners, looked

DIARY DATES

The dates for the next two ISPE Seminars will be: Thursday 12th October 2017, in Bourne End, near Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, on the broad subject of water chemistry and related topics – more details to follow. The next one will be Thursday 23rd November, probably in Amesbury, Wiltshire, but the venue and subjects will be announced later in the year.

at the provision of, and correct way to apply, fi ttings to a concrete shell. Allen Wilson, FISPE, looked at the importance of microbiological testing and once again kept everyone entertained with an informative but nonetheless amusing delivery on this vital subject, looking at what measures need to be taken to avoid the closure of public pools.

CPD SCHEME Over fi fty people have now enrolled onto the ISPE Continuous Professional Development Scheme and registration is free until July 2018. The scheme is open to ISPE members and non- members (you don’t have to join the ISPE to enrol onto the scheme).

A number of leading companies in the trade have been presenting free training sessions on various subjects and delegates receive certifi cates of attendance indicating four or eight CPD points. It is hoped that as time goes on, this programme will be expanded, as more and more companies will offer free training enabling those who are serious about their career development to expand their knowledge and experience within the pool and spa trade. More details can be found on the ISPE website or by contacting the ISPE.

• Engage in the education and training of persons within all sectors of the swimming pool industry;

• Promote unrestricted co-operation and liaison between all persons actively involved in the industry and its allied professions and trades;
