Swimming Pool Scene HOTEL POOLS

construction materials and innovation in fi ltration will reduce water consumption and maintenance. The early involvement of experts like Natare from the outset, as part of the design and construction team can make all the difference.

The luxurious Duke of Richmond Hotel is located in St Peter

Port, Guernsey. The hotel’s water leisure facilities include a heated outdoor pool that is open to guests from May until the end of September.

“The pool is one of the most popular hotel areas for our

guests, where they enjoy relaxing and catching some sun in the comfortable loungers, and enjoying the many amenities that we offer at the pool side,” comments Rui Silva, Head of Maintenance at the Duke of Richmond, who is responsible for the daily operation and functionality of the pool.

RUNNING COSTS The hotel’s housekeeping team ensures that the swimming pool is kept clean prior to its opening, and throughout the day, and the maintenance team is responsible for the health and safety aspects; taking water tests throughout the day, ensuring that safety equipment is in good order, and that all health and safety requirements have been adhered to. All members of the

maintenance team are fully certifi ed in pool water management. The hotel also employs two external contractors, Pool Care and Feedwater, who take independent visual and water checks on a monthly basis.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Says Rui: “For health and safety reasons we do not hire out our pool or operate dip and dine activities, however, we actively promote the swimming facilities to our residential guests. For many, especially our more health-conscious guests, or those staying with families, having access to a swimming pool is a deciding factor when choosing a place to stay.”

The Duke of Richmond is part of Red Carnation Hotels – a collection of family-run boutique hotels in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Switzerland and the USA.

Also in the group is the Grade II Listed Summer Lodge Country House Hotel & Spa in Evershot, Dorset. The hotel boasts a 10.6m x 6m indoor pool, with a depth of 0.9 m leading to 1.2 m that is heated to 29-30˚C. The building is a gluelam supporting timber and glass structure, meaning that guests can lie in the pool and look up to the sky. The hotel also has a whirlpool heated to 40˚C. Grand Designs At The Gainsborough Hotel

The Gainsborough Bath Spa hotel is the fi rst and only hotel in the UK to offer its guests the opportunity to access and experience Bath’s famed natural thermal waters in its incredible spa. Barr + Wray secured the fi ltration and water treatment package for this prominent project, which saw the former city centre hospital transformed into a fi ve star luxury hotel and spa within the Grade II-listed building.

The project included the design, supply and commissioning

of the fi ltration and water treatment systems for the main pool, Balnarium, Caldarium within the Spa Village and private bedroom thermal baths. The pools are fi lled with spring water from an artisan well bored into the bath springs from the vaults under the hotel. Barr + Wray designed and installed a miniature water treatment plant to ensure the water is suitable for use in both the pools and the hotel room baths, without compromising on the nature or temperature of the spring water. Lorne Kennedy of Barr + Wray explains: “The spring water constantly fl ows from the well so the pools are continually topped up with fresh spring water. An automatic control system was implemented to maintain the volume of water in the pools to prevent overfi lling - a rather unusual system by industry standards.”

deliver the project. Lorne continues: “Another unusual feature of the pool is that it is a freeboard style pool incorporating multiple stainless steel water draw off slots around the perimeter at surface water level that return to a balance tank.

“This maximises the surface water draw off giving the benefi t of better water quality, while providing the aesthetic impression of more traditional freeboard pool suited to the hotel’s style.”
