branded as East Riding Leisure, located in Beverley, Haltemprice, Goole, Bridlington, Driffi eld, Hornsea, Withernsea, Pocklington, and South Holderness (a shared facility), and a dry side only centre in South Cave.
In recent years, ERL has been backed by an ambitious council capital investment programme called ‘invest to save’. This determined regeneration programme of new builds includes the £7.1m refurbishment of East Riding Leisure Haltemprice, including a new gym, library, GP surgery, reception and catering relocation, the £1.3m refurbishment of East Riding Leisure Beverley, and a new build for East Riding Leisure Driffi eld back in 2008. Future capital programmes include a planned major refurbishment at East Riding Leisure Hornsea.
SPORTS PERSONALITIES East Riding Leisure’s newest leisure facility is the state-of-the- art centre in Bridlington, which was opened by a trio of sporting celebrities in May last year.
Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington OBE; badminton player Gail Emms MBE and footballer Dean Windass cut the ribbon on East Riding Leisure Bridlington, which cost £25million to build. The new facility boasts a six-lane 25m swimming pool, a smaller learner pool, a freeform pool with water features, two water slides and swimming spectator seating for 150. It also has a changing village and a health suite with a steam room, sauna, spa pool and showers.
The facility was funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council (£20.9 million); the Coastal Communities Fund (£2.1m); and Sport England (£2m). BAM Construction was the main contractor, while FT Leisure was responsible for the design and installation of the pools. The play structure was provided by Ustigate Waterplay and the slides are by Van Egdom.
Says Darren: “The provision of a leisure service is not a statutory council service, and with the ongoing reductions in council budgets, the challenge is to provide a leisure service at minimum cost - one that contributes to the council’s fi nances, whilst at the same time meeting the council’s Corporate Priorities.

SWIM LESSONS
Another innovation for ERL in 2017 is the introduction of the new Swimming Teachers Association (STA) International Learn to Swim Programme throughout its swimming lessons programme. “This new scheme offers a fresh and innovative swim programme appealing to learners of all ages from baby/preschool lessons to platinum awards for advanced swimming,” comments Darren. “The new swimming programme, coupled to our membership scheme, and other provision including birthday parties, and support for vulnerable families, is enabling ERL to offer a complete package encouraging families to experience leisure together as a family unit.” East Riding Leisure Tel. 01482 395223
