Roger Milla has been fortunate to play in three World Cups for the Cameroon national team a feat that most football players can only dream of in their careers. His accomplishments came rather late in life as he would at the ripe old age of 38 go on to score four goals in the 1990 world cup, the event that he is most remembered for.

Roger Milla was born in Cameroon’s capital of Yaoundé and was signed by his first club in Douala at the early age of 13. His career would progress well as he would go on to win ‘The African Footballer of the Year’ in 1974. A few years later in 1977 he would be signed by a French Club Valenciennes and would go on to play for several other European clubs like AS Monaco, Bastia, Saint-Etienne, most of them for very short stints. His longest and best tenure was with Saint-Etienne in 1984.

Roger Milla’s name became synonymous with excellence in Africa Soccer. He is most notable for his gyrating hips dance at the corner zone after scoring a goal; a feat he was really prolific at.

No.7 Haile Gebrselassie Country:

Ethiopia Sports: Track and Field

The most dominant distance runner at the beginning of the 21st century Haile Gebrselassie ranks 7th in our rankings of Africa’s Greatest Athletes ever in Africa’s sports history.

Haile Gebrselassie used to run back and forth to school everyday growing up in rural Ethiopia in his home town of Asella in Arsi Province. He had his athletics breakthrough when he won the 5000-metre and 10,000-metre races at the 1992 Junior World Championships in Seoul, and he has been dominant ever since. He has broken 61 Ethiopian National Records ranging from 800 meters to the marathon, and has set over 27 world records and is widely considered one of the greatest distance runners in history. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, Gebrselassie tried to become the first male athlete in history to win three straight Olympic gold med- als in the 10,000 metres but alas he will fall short.

Gebrselassie is indisputably one of the greatest distance runners in history. On November 7 2010, he would drop out of the New York City Marathon with an inflamed knee, and then announce his retirement. However a few days later, he posted to his Twitter account that he wants to run in the 2012 London Olympics. It is speculated that he would likely enter politics after retirement.
