UEFA Champion League Roundup By Thomas Meinders

It's down to eight. Eight teams are still on their way to Europe's highest glamour in football - the Champions League Trophy. Three English clubs, two Spanish and one each from Ger- many, Italy and Ukraine. We look back on how they made it possible.

AC MILAN - TOTTENHAM HOT-

SPURS 0:1; 0:0 A single goal scored by "Spiderman" Peter Crouch made the underdog go through. When the tall striker made his goal at Milan in Min-

ute 80 of the first leg, it was quite surprising, but still it became clear that it would be very tough for Milan to equalize draw level. And Spurs coach Harry Redknapp did what he had to do. With a defen- sive line-up, he frustrated Milan attackers. It was a boring game at the Spurs ground, with only few goal-scoring chances, but the Spurs did their job and are going to face Real Madrid in the quarter- finals.

OLYMPIQUE LYON - REAL MADRID 1:1; 0:3 Real Madrid chased two of their nightmares on one evening. With the 3-0 win at the Bernabeu Sta-

dium, they reached the quarterfinals for the first time in eight years and gained their first victory against Lyon at the eighth match of the two. Marcel, Karim Benzema and Ángel Di Maria’s strikes left no doubt that the current Real Madrid squad is in opposition to former years a strong team that does not live from their single players abilities only. Even Cristiano Ronaldo is replaceable at José Mourinho's system.

VALENCIA CF - FC SCHALKE 04 1:1, 1:3 If there had to be a last indicator left showing that German football is on its way to overtaking not

only Italian but also Spanish in the UEFA-five-year-ranking it is this result. Schalke 04, struggling in the Bundesliga, got rid of his coach Felix Magath and having problems all over defeated Spanish top club Valencia with a fantastic performance at the Veltins-Arena. Even after getting behind by an early goal of former Wolfsburg-defender Ricardo Costa in the second leg, Schalke did not lose their temper. Led by Raúl, Jefferson Farfán with two goals and young Swiss player Mario Gavranovic turned the result around and reached the quarter finals, where they are going to face Inter Milan: A rerun of the 1997 UEFA Cup Final that Schalke won.
