However, South Africa faced a difficult test against an unbeaten India before the match but went on to end the India's unbeaten run in the process with a dramatic three-wicket win in Nagpur with left needing 13 from the final over, Robin Peterson hit Ashish Nehra for a four and then a six to help the Proteas reach a target of 297 with two balls to spare after the co-hosts' opening duo had seemed to set the platform for a massive total with an opening stand of 142, with 87 coming off the first 10 overs.


However, the South African defeat only came against England who claimed a thrilling six-run victory over South Africa in Chennai and got back on course for the knock-out stages.


The English posted just 171 on a turning wicket and looked set to slump to another defeat after South Africa moved to 63 without loss. Even at 124-3 the result did not look in doubt, but three wickets in four balls changed the complexion of the match.


However, South Africa finished at the top of group A with 10 points from six matches followed by In- dia and England respectively.
