Zimbabwe Sport: Swimming


Born and raised in Zimbabwe Kirsty is the first African female to ever win an Olympic swimming Gold medal and also broke a swimming world record. Kirsty who was dubbed ‘a Golden Girl’ by Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe is the World Record holder of the 200m backstroke and has broken among other world records; the 100meters backstroke and that have only recently been broken. Kir- sty has won several awards amongst which is the’ African Female Swimmer of the Year’ for the 2004 – 2005 and 2007 -2008 years. She has a treasure trove of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and there has never been an athlete more decorated than Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry within and out- side of swimming on the African Continent.

Ghana Sport: Boxing


With 39 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws, with 28 knockout wins Azumah Nelson became the most famous and decorated Boxer to hail from Africa. He became a household name and made many Africans living abroad hold their heads high as Azumah won boxing matche after boxing match in many international Arenas around the world including the famed Madison Square Garden of New York.


Azumah was born in Accra Ghana on September 19th 1958 and became a stalwart amateur in his early boxing career with a record of 50 – 2. Azumah went professional in 1979 but was not well known outside of Ghana but that was soon rectified as he started racking up the wins and knocking opponents out. His first professional fight was against Billy Kwame in Accra who he defeated in eight rounds in December of 1980 he would defeat Joe Skipper to win the continental African Boxing title to add to his repertoire.
