AASI SNOWBOARD TECHNICAL MANUAL Foreword

Snowboarding is a relatively new sport compared to nordic and alpine skiing, yet the roots of snowboarding are long-standing and diverse. Te sport was born as a means for members of the skateboarding and surfing countercultures to express themselves on the snow during winter months. With the development of equipment and access to ski areas, this form of expression quickly gained appeal with thrill-seeking individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Snowboarders share a common enjoyment of the unique feelings and sensations that come from sliding on snow, standing sideways on a single board. From this shared passion many new facets of the sport have developed to further our culture of diversity.

Snowboard instructors have something else in common, having chosen to spend their free time – or careers – sharing their passion for the sport with others. Snowboarding is not simply what you do; it is a part of who you are. Whether you teach full-time at a world-class resort or part-time at a local area with a short season, you might spend many nights, weekends, and holidays away from friends and family. For some, this may even mean leaving home for faraway lands in the search for snow. All because you love what you do and know that you have the ability to transform the lives of your students while promoting the snowsports culture and mountain lifestyle. Tis manual is a resource to help you maintain your passion for the sport and make a difference for your students by being the most effective teacher you can be. It does this by covering technical knowledge pertaining to snowboard instruction and offering adaptable progressions for all levels of snowboarding. It’s also intended to help you in your pursuit of all levels of AASI certifications and PSIA-AASI specializations. For teaching and learning professionals, it serves as a resource for continued professional development and a guide for on-the-job learning. Once you’ve read this manual, it will be time to take what you’ve learned and apply it on the hill. Ten you will truly own the information. Just as riding techniques and equipment are constantly evolving, so is snowboard instruction. Tat’s why it’s important to use your own experiences and creativity – as well as insights gained from fellow instructors, division education staff, and trainers – to build on the information presented here. Tis manual should be viewed as only one facet of your ongoing quest for excellence. Have fun with it!
