rotation
Circular movement about an axis, including the movement of a limb about its axis; the spinning of a snowboard about an axis perpendicular to its base.
rotational control
The relationship of body parts as they rotate relative to each other.
rotational movements Movements that increase, limit, or decrease the rotation of the snowboard.
rotators
The muscles that cause a part of the body to rotate.
safety
Freedom from the occurrence or risk of injury, danger or loss.
sagittal plane
An anatomical plane dividing the body into right and left halves. Fore (forward) and aft (backward) movements occur along this plane.
SCARF Model
Developed by neuroscientist David Rock, the SCARF Model’s elements of status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness are viewed through a social survival lens. Instructors can use this model to recognize how they influence students by creating environment that is supportive of student motives.
scarving
Skidded turns with a high edge angle where the rider is actually carving for portions of each turn.
scissor/scissoring
Moving the legs laterally in opposite directions at the same time under a stable torso for the purpose of creating the board performance of pivot. This movement is used in all aspects of riding to create or refine pivot.
scorpion
The act of catching one’s toe edge, falling face first into the slope, only to have the board’s heel edge come up from behind to hit yourself in the back of the head, like a scorpion’s tail.
shovel
The widest part of a snowboard deck. A true twin tip can have a shovel at both ends.
sidecountry
Backcountry terrain accessible by a ski lift.
sidecut
The hourglass shape of a snowboard when viewed from above, typically wider at the tip and tail, and narrower at the waist. This characteristic helps snow- board turn when the edge is tilted and pressed into the snow.
sidecut radius
If an imaginary line matching the curvature of the snowboard continued around to form a full circle, the radius of the circle (sidecut radius) would be the distance between the center of the circle and the side of the board. Sidecut radius influences the ideal type of turn the snowboard is designed to make.
sideslip
A maneuver in which the rider slides down the hill on one edge while perpen- dicular to the fall line (pointing across the hill), an effective way to slow down.
shiftie
An air in which the snowboard rotates in either direction and back before landing.
service concepts
AASI concepts used to provide excep- tional customer service.
session/sessioning
The time spent riding the park, pipe, or a single feature repetitiously; or to hike a single feature with your students or friends and work on your skills. This helps the rider trust the feature and its irregularities.
sensory preferences
The way learners primarily process information; according to Neil Fleming the three different sensory preferences are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (VAK).
simple
The second phase of the Motor Learning Cycle, where a task is used to isolate and establish a new movement or board performance on easier terrain.
sintered base
The p-tex base of a snowboard made by pressing polyethylene pellets into a sheet (in comparison to an extruded p-tex base, where polyethylene pellets are melted together).
skate
To move on a snowboard by pushing with the free foot.
sketch
To lose control during part of a turn, maneuver or landing.
skidded turn
A turn in which the edge slips laterally as it travels forward; or a turn that is not carved.
skidding
Movement of the snowboard in a curved path characterized by simultaneous sliding (forward action) and slipping (sideways action).
skill
Learned movement, resulting in pro- ficient movement that is controlled, coordinated and efficient.
slalom
Considered a technical discipline in rac- ing, the course is set with gates close together, dictating short-radius turns.
sliding
The movement of a snowboard across the snow in the direction of the long axis of the snowboard.
slipping The movement of a snowboard gliding in a direction perpendicular to the long axis of the snowboard.
slopestyle
A type of snowboard competition featur- ing judged runs through terrain features.
