Tis chapter describes how to apply the knowledge you gained from the preceding chapters to teaching lessons. Tis is a vast and important topic, so be sure to check out references made to other teaching resources such as Core Concepts for Snowsports Instructors and the Snowboard Teaching Handbook. For the limited pages provided, this section delivers ample information for relating technical knowledge to clear, concise, and logical delivery.


Objectives


■ Recognize the importance of your students’ motivations and goals in directing your lesson plan, and learn how to merge those needs with movement coaching to create a customized lesson plan.


■ Determine applications of the Teaching Cycle for all of your lessons. ■ Understand, explain, and apply the Motor Learning Cycle to create progressions that increase lesson effectiveness.


■ Know the teaching styles and how to use them to address individual learning styles. INTRODUCTION


Now that you have a solid understanding of biomechanics, board performance concepts, and how to identify effective movements, it’s time to explore teaching these things to your guests. Whether you call yourself a teacher, instructor, coach, or pro, your goal is to make sure your students walk away from your lessons as better riders and feeling stoked about the sport.


Te Teaching Cycle represents the set of actions and behaviors that instructors should consistently put into practice to make sure their students have an experience that is memorable, educational, and fun. While delving into teaching concepts, you will also learn how to increase your understanding of students’ unique motivations. In this chapter, you’ll explore sensory preferences, learning styles, and motivations. More importantly, you’ll see how these concepts impact a student’s ability to learn. Tis chapter also identifies different teaching styles and how to use them to deliver great lessons every time. Last, but not least, you’ll learn how to bring it all home for riders at the close of your time together.


THE TEACHING MODEL


One of the pillars of PSIA-AASI’s educational system is the Teaching Model, which is centered on creating a learning partnership with each student. Tis partnership fosters a student-centered lesson in a learning environment that’s experiential and supportive. By establishing engaging, motivating, and interactive relationships with students, you are better able to measure the impact of learning and adjust your teaching strategy as needed.
