AASI SNOWBOARD TECHNICAL MANUAL Introduction

Tis section introduces the guiding principles of the book and develops context for the discussions that follow. Tere are four main areas of focus; the first is a brief discussion of PSIA-AASI values: safety, fun, and learning. Tat’s followed by a brief history of the Snowboard Teaching System (STS), and the history of American snowboarding and its instructional roots. Tis chapter also illustrates how the technology of snowboard equipment and snowboard technique evolved together, creating more efficiency for the average rider and paving the way for the different disciplines found in snowboarding today, as depicted in the Y Model (or Riding Model). You will also learn about concepts relating to professional and personal development and how to apply them to training, certification, and on-the-job learning.

VALUES: SAFETY, FUN, AND LEARNING

Te values of safety, fun, and learning serve as a filter for the day-to-day actions, behaviors, and decisions of PSIA-AASI members. For values to be effective, they need to be shared by both PSIA-AASI peers and customers.

SAFETY

+ SAFETY

Te first value, safety, reminds you to be safe on the mountain in order to prevent injuries to yourself, your students, and other resort guests. Injuries can obviously affect quality of life, but also limit opportunities to slide on snow.

As an instructor, you are a professional held to a high standard of conduct on the mountain. By continually identifying and addressing potential safety concerns, you are showing your customers that you care about their security and well-being. Tis goes a long way toward building a lasting trust between you and your students, and other resort guests. In addition, students have an increased capacity for learning when they feel safe and secure.
