Tis chapter describes the PSIA-AASI Teaching Model™ as a framework for combining effective teaching methodology with appropriate technical content. Te Skier Zone section outlines how to accurately evaluate a skier’s ability level. It also provides the technical content that helps instructors improve a person’s skiing ability, starting with the beginner zone and progressing through the advanced zone.
Objectives
■ Identify how specific “core concept” elements influence technical decisions and lesson content.
■ Understand the Student Makeup and Instructor Behavior elements of the Teaching Model, which together form the Learning Partnership.
■ Identify the appropriate skier zone for any student, based on such factors as terrain, balance and movement characteristics, and common ski performance.
■ Select the appropriate skill focus for common skiing outcomes for beginner- through advanced-zone skiing.
■ Determine how to develop body movements and ski performance for beginner- through advanced-zone skiing.
INTRODUCTION
Your success as a ski teacher relies on your ability to clearly present the mechanics of skiing to a wide variety of people in a creative learning environment. Tis requires in-depth knowledge of technical material found in this manual and requires that you be well versed in many aspects of communication, human development, learning theory, and motivational strategies. PSIA-AASI’s Core Concepts for Snowsports Instructors addresses these elements in detail, so you’ll likely want to add this resource to your library. Please see the list of PSIA-AASI education resources at the end of this manual. As presented in Core Concepts, your interpersonal skills are vital.
