■ Move the inside ski parallel to the outside ski and proceed through the parallel turn. Focus: Parallel and converging step turns allow a skier to quickly change the paths of the skis. Balancing on the outside ski at the finish of a turn, the skier can efficiently step the uphill ski into a position that moves him or her into the next turn.

ADVANCED ZONE

Advanced skiers range from those who can confidently handle the easiest groomed black runs to experts who can apply a variety of turn shapes to control speed on any type of terrain, in any snow condition. Te advanced-zone skills presented here are based on a carved turn outcome, but may explore a wide range of potential outcomes related to skier desires and motivation, terrain, and snow conditions. Te skills and knowledge gained while in the beginner/novice and intermediate zones are part of an advanced skier’s repertoire. It may be necessary to return to skills taught at lower levels to review and refine ski action and body movements for continued progress.

COMMON ADVANCED-ZONE CHARACTERISTICS

Skiers in the advanced zone typically share the following characteristics. Terrain

Skiers progress from the easiest groomed black terrain to ungroomed black, and then double-black-diamond, and off-piste terrain.

Balance and Movement

Advanced-zone skiers demonstrate refined, predictable movement patterns as they direct their skis, manage balance, and control speed on groomed black terrain. Tey use an expanding range of lateral and fore/aft movements, as well as flexion, extension, and rotation relative to increasing speed and forces. Tey have also learned to anticipate and adjust movements in response to changes in terrain and snow conditions.

Ski Performance Outcomes

Advanced-zone skiers carve turns on a variety of terrain or adjust their skill blend and turn shape for the demands of changing snow conditions or challenging terrain. Tese variations occur more automatically with experience and practice.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR COMMON ADVANCED-ZONE OUTCOMES Te following sections offer information you can share – or dynamic turns you can have advanced-zone skiers perform in different terrain or snow conditions – to help skiers improve their skiing skills.

Carved Parallel Turns (Advanced) ■ Refine accuracy and skill application of all components of a carved parallel turn. ■ Develop precision while increasing the range and intensity of movements. ■ Ski faster and on steeper slopes. ■ Carve turns in a variety of situations, terrain, and snow conditions. ■ Explore carving and skidding actions within the same turn.
