In short-radius, fall-line turns, the skier moves straight or nearly straight down the hill, and passes rapidly through this phase. For medium- and long-radius turns, body movement is directed diagonally down the hill and is longer in duration. Pole swing – which, along with pole touch, is described in more detail on page 46 – begins during the finish of the previous turn and the touch occurs with or slightly after the edge change.

Shaping

Te shaping phase of the turn is roughly the middle third of the turn, from just before to just after the fall line. It’s in this phase that the skis reach their high- est edge angle.

Here, the skier increases edge angle by further inward movement of the CM, remaining in balance with the external forces. Tese forces – attributed to gravity, inertia, and centripetal force – build during the shaping phase when speed increases as the skis approach the fall line. Te forces continue to increase as the skis leave the fall line and begin turning across the hill. An inclined stance is most effective when leg tipping combines with leg rotation to produce angulation. Tis allows the skier to concentrate more pressure against the outside ski and combat these forces.

After the pole touch in the initiation phase, the inside hand rolls forward to keep the hand in front of the body as the pole tip is removed from the snow. Te poles help the skier maintain balance.

Finish

Te finish phase of the turn begins roughly two thirds of the way through the curved path, or shortly after the fall line, and continues until the direction change is accomplished.

As the skis continue to turn across the hill, edge angle is reduced to balance

(lessen) the external forces at the bottom of the turn and to prepare for the next turn. Tis occurs as the skier realigns his or her CM, moving from the more inclined stance of the shaping phase and back over the feet. Te upper body continues to lead down
