Guard in Celtics dynasty in 1960s

BYMATT SCHUDEL Larry Siegfried, 71, who helped

lead Ohio State University to its only national championship in men’s basketball in 1960 and who later played on five NBA title teams with the Boston Celtics, died Oct. 14 at a Cleveland hospi- tal.He had a heart attack Oct. 5. Mr. Siegfried, a sure-shooting

6-foot-3 guard, was a solid, if little-celebrated member of the legendary Celtics teams that dominated the NBA in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a steady pres- ence in the Boston backcourt, while other stars, such as Bill Russell, Sam Jones, K.C. Jones and Mr. Siegfried’s college team- mate, JohnHavlicek, grabbed the headlines. Mr. Siegfried joined the Celtics

in 1963, midway through the team’s dynastic run of 11 champi- onships in 13 seasons under coach Red Auerbach. From 1964 to 1969, Mr. Siegfried played on five NBA champions, sometimes as a starter but more often as a reliable substitute off the bench. He recorded his best season in

1968-69, when he averaged 14.2 points a game, 3.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists. During his nine-year NBA career, he connected on a stellar 85.4 percent of his free- throw attempts and led the league in free-throw shooting in 1966 and 1969. After seven seasons in Boston,

Mr. Siegfried finished out his NBA career in San Diego, Hous- ton and Atlanta. He retired in 1972. Lawrence Eugene Siegfried

was born May 22, 1939, in the small town of Shelby, Ohio, and was standout player in high school, leading the state in scor- ing as a senior. At Ohio State,Mr. Siegfried led

the team with 19.6 points a game as a sophomore. A year later,

FCC lawyer argued Supreme Court case

BY LAURENWISEMAN Joseph A.Marino, 75, a Federal

Communications Commission lawyer who successfully argued before the Supreme Court a case that upheld the agency’s authori- ty to penalize a broadcast for indecency under certain condi- tions, died Oct. 7 at a hospice in Clearwater, Fla. He had adrenal cortical cancer. In 1978, Mr. Marino was the

lead litigator in Federal Commu- nications Commission v. Pacifica Foundation. The case stemmed from the 1973 airing of satirist George Carlin’s “Filthy Words” monologue. The Carlin routine was broadcast at 2 p.m. on a New York noncommercial, listener- supported radio station operated by the Pacifica Foundation. During the case, Mr. Marino

argued that the explicit language was “indecent” and aired when “children were undoubtedly in the audience.” His position was that the FCC

had the authority to ban such language when children could be listening. In a 5-4 decision, the high court agreed. Mr.Marino worked for theFCC

from 1960 until he retired as chairman of its review board in 1997. A native Washingtonian, Jo-

seph AnthonyMarino was a 1954 graduate of St. John’s College High School. He received a bache- lor’s degree in 1958 and a law degree in 1960, both from the University ofNotre Dame. He was a member ofAscension

Catholic Church in Bowie, where he served as director of the church’s religious school pro- gram. He moved to Clearwater from Glenn Dale in 1997. Survivors include his wife of 39 years,MarianMack “Lucy”Mari-

when Havlicek and Jerry Lucas joined the Buckeye varsity, Mr. Siegfried became more of a play- maker under coach Fred Taylor. With a balanced attack, the

Buckeyes defeated California, 75- 55, for the 1960 NCAA champion- ship. Mr. Siegfried scored 13 points in the title game. A year later, Mr. Siegfried was

the captain of a powerful Ohio Stateteamthat entered theNCAA tournament undefeated and rankedNo. 1 in the country. Inthe championship game, however, the Buckeyes lost in overtime to their cross-state rival, theUniver- sity of Cincinnati, 70-65. Mr. Siegfried, a second-team all-American, was drafted by the NBA’s Cincinnati Royals in 1961. But he was so shaken by Ohio State’s loss to Cincinnati that he refused to play for a team in that city. Instead, he spent two years with the Cleveland Pipers — owned by future New York Yan- kees owner George Steinbrenner — of the upstart American Bas- ketball Association before going to Boston. After his playing career, Mr. Siegfried was an assistant coach at Ohio State and for the NBA’s Houston Rockets. He later lived in Perryville, Ohio, and worked as a prison counselor and motiva- tional speaker. Survivors include his wife of 38

years, Tina Caskin Siegfried; three daughters; his mother; two sisters; and a grandson. “As time goes on, the champi-

onship does not mean as much to me,”Mr. Siegfried said in January at a 50th reunion of Ohio State’s 1960 national championship team. “The thing that matters to meis what coach Taylor taught us and the relationships, those in- tangible things. The core values that made me who I am today, that’s what’s important to me.” schudelm@washpost.com
