Primal Pattern training can and should be continued until the recipient can comfortable meet, then exceed the demands of their chosen life pursuits. For example, a fireman has to deal with unstable surfaces, carry and hold unstable objects and also wear heavy clothing and his training program needs to condition him to withstand these stresses. Once the goal has been reached, a maintenance program should be imple- mented to prevent deconditioning and subsequent injury.

CONCLUSION Primal Patterns are movement patterns that would have been absolutely neces- sary to survive the selective pressures of nature. Performing Primal Patterns effi- ciently requires optimal infant motor/sen- sory followed by sensory/motor develop- ment. While many children, adolescents and adults today show clear signs of infant motor developmental deficiency, the use of crawling exercises and appara- tus such as the Swiss ball can be used to restore integrated motor function. Once the core stabiliser and prime mover sys-

tems are isolated and integrated with the extremities through developmental exer- cises, Primal Pattern training can be pursued and optimal results expected. Failure to assess readiness for Primal Pattern training typically ends up in rapid strength development followed by injury.

The majority of orthopedic injuries today are idiopathic in origin, yet assessing Primal Pattern readiness often uncovers infant motor developmental deficiencies, which can be verified by the fact that cor- rection most often results in immediate improvement in the competency of Primal Pattern movement.

In short, Primal Pattern training results in improved performance, reduced incidence of injury and supports human physiology.
