CLIENT ASSESSMENT HIP
4) Internal rotators The tensor fascia latae, gluteus minimus and anterior fibres of gluteus medius internally rotate the hip. Like the external rotators, they can be tested in sitting (figure 13) with pressure applied on the outside of the ankle and inside of the thigh, or prone as in figure 14 with the pelvis stabilised.
5) Hip extensors Gluteus maximus - patient is prone with knee flexed to 90o
. Stabilise by
placing one hand on opposite posterior superior iliac crest. Other hand placed on posterior mid thigh of leg to be tested. Resist hip extension. Hamstrings are covered in section 8.
7) Quadriceps group Quadriceps - sit patient on edge of couch, start with knee at 90o
of flexion
and ask them to extend against your pressure applied onto the tibia.

6) Adductors Adductor magnus adducts and extends the hip. To test patient is in side-lying with the unaffected on top and flexed at the hip and knee. Apply resistance to adduction of the bottom leg.
8) Hamstring group Hamstrings – patient prone on couch, knee flexed to 20o
to 30o , ask to flex
against your resistance applied just above ankle.

Figure 16: Adductor magnus muscle
and internally rotated with stabilisation on opposite ilium. Resist movement in direction of hip adduction and flexion.
Adductor longus and brevis - flex the hip as well as adducting. Position for testing is again supine, hip flexed to about 25o
