Mission-critical applications in high-end data centre environments often require higher aggregate throughput and are more sensitive to latency. Because of the high throughput demand, iSCSI HBAs will eventually find their largest market in these environments. However, some mission-critical applications might remain on FC systems until iSCSI performance improves even further, such as when 10GbE is widely available. In the meantime, companies are starting to deploy a mix of FC and iSCSI hosts in the data centre. iSCSI can be used on mid-range servers that don’t require high levels of throughput and don’t have high CPU utilization. The central SAN can also be extended to satellite locations using iSCSI. iSCSI allows remote offices to access FC storage in the data centre.
