Zoning is a switch-based technology: Implemented by the fabric switch When zoning is implemented, only devices that are part of the same zone(s) can see each other Unzoned devices are “invisible” when zoning is implemented
Zoning is to either the physical port or the World Wide Port name. Either way, this is about the physical port.
We don’t always want to go to the physical port, we want to go to the logical unit level. At this point zoning doesn’t go down to the logical unit level. Zoning goes to the port level. If we start using a RAID system and we actually have 3 logical units that are accessible through that one physical port, one zone (if it was zoned to that port) could see all 3 logical units.
We need something that will complement zoning and give us finer granularity of control. This is where LUN Mapping and LUN Masking comes in.
