U.S. Figure Skating membership tops 181,700
U.S. Figure Skating announced its
membership for 2015–16 increased 1.9 percent over its 2014–15 figures. For the membership cycle starting July 1, 2015, and ending June 30, 2016, the organization had 181,703 members, including 122,503 Basic Skills members, 58,828 full members and 372 Friends of Figure Skating. Last year, U.S. Figure Skating was
composed of 703 member, collegiate and school-affiliated clubs, more than 1,000 Basic Skills programs, 602 synchronized skating teams and 79 Theatre On Ice teams. “We are thrilled to see U.S. Figure
Skating’s membership growth over the last year,” U.S. Figure Skating President Samuel Auxier said. “Last year marked our third-highest membership since 1997 and was made possible by the dedication and hard work of our member clubs, program directors and instructors, coaches, ath- letes, volunteers and staff.” The U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Pro-
gram continued to welcome new skaters in 2015–16. Basic Skills membership ex- ceeded 122,500 members and experienced the second-highest enrollment in the pro- gram’s history (132,125 in 2005–06). Learn to Skate USA, an enhanced iter-
ation of the Basic Skills Program, launched on June 1, 2016, and is the only beginning skating program in the country endorsed by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey, US Speedskating, Special Olympics and the Professional Skaters Association (PSA). Learn to Skate USA currently has 1,006 registered programs and is working with rinks nationwide to start new programs.
In celebration of the Rio Olympics and the 2017 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, World silver medalist Ashley Wagner visited Kansas City on Aug. 11. Wagner, whose family was sta- tioned at Fort Leavenworth (Kansas City area) and who skated as a member of the Kansas City Figure Skating Club as a young child, returned to the Show Me State to talk about her journey as a figure skater and the 2017 U.S. Championships. (Did you know Ashley lived in Kansas when she watched Tara Lipinski win the 1998 Olympic gold medal, thus igniting her own Olympic aspirations?) Wagner’s day included six media stops, a VIP experience at a Kansas City Royals game (including pregame video board interview) and an exhibition and autograph session at Cen- terpoint Community Ice (secondary ven- ue for the 2017 U.S. Championships) for about 200 skaters and fans from Kansas, Missouri and Illinois.
