LEDs are often thought to be “cool” lights, but in fact LED lights generate heat in a different way. Incandescent bulbs generate heat via infrared radia- tion, which heats the area around the light. LEDs do not generate infrared light, but the diode heats up as the light is generated. This heat must be dissipated via a heat sink and thermal management, which is an important consideration when choosing an LED bulb. In addition, LED bulbs can easily be built in many shapes and sizes, allowing for a multitude of light fixture designs. Some LED lights cannot be dimmed, but slightly more expensive LED lights are available that can be dimmed like conventional incandescent bulbs.

Comparing Costs Between CFL and LED Bulbs

Cost is a factor when purchasing replacement light bulbs. Thinking about long-term investment and savings accumulated along the way is advanta- geous. It is important to look at the total cost of ownership—the cost to purchase the bulb and the electricity needed to power the bulb. While both CFL and LED bulbs cost more to purchase than incandescent bulbs, the total ownership cost can be substantially less in the long run. In addition, while incandescent bulbs last on average 1,200 hours, CFLs can last 8,000 hours and some LEDs last up to 25,000 hours. To the right is a table showing the cost comparison of incandescent versus CFL and LED lights with bulbs recently purchased at Lowe’s.

Cost per bulb at Lowe’s Average lifespan

Watts used Number of bulbs needed for 30,000 hours of use Total purchase price Total cost of electricity (30,000 hours @ $0.12 per kWh) Total cost of ownership for approximately 25 years

Incandescent $1 1,200 hrs

60W 25

$25 $216

$241.00

CFL

$1.66 10,000 hrs

13W 3

$4.98 $48

$52.98

LED $2.48 15,000 hrs

9.5W 2

$4.96 $33

$37.96 *Numbers reflect prices as of August 2015 As the figures show, long-lasting, energy efficient bulbs yield significant

savings over time. Considering the average home has dozens of light bulbs, savings can add up quickly.
