Lubricant Can Reduce Porosity in Die Castings Fochem
Fochem International, Alrode, South Africa, offers ef- ficient and practical tribological solutions for the global metalcasting industry. Te company has an extensive product portfolio, ranging from lubricants to release agents for the high-pressure diecasting industry. In recent years, Fochem International has improved the lubri-
cating properties of its plunger lubricants through an innovative manufacturing process, providing customers with the highest quality beads for a reliable application. Fochem International’s graphite-based beads are now manufactured with pure, semi- nano graphite that can even withstand extremely high tempera- tures and pressure without starting to oxidize. Fochem International’s latest development, “white beads,” is a valuable asset in addition that offer excellent lubricating properties and a clean casting process. All the plunger beads are round and free flowing, anti-static and dust-free. Tey are suitable for tropical conditions in Asia. Te globules con- sist of a high melting point synthetic wax. As soon as they hit the shot sleeve, the beads start spreading immediately. A thin and even lubricating layer is formed, due to their capil- lary action. All dry plunger lubricants effectively protect the shot sleeve against aluminum erosion; and they can be used in very small amounts to minimize casting porosity. Best results can be achieved in conjunction with Fochem Interna- tional’s dosing machine Dispenser 3D, manufactured by an associate company, Tribo-Chemie, Hammelburg, Germany. In this way, it is ensured that gas and pinholes inside the castings are markedly reduced. Tanks to the pure and capil- lary N-paraffin, the beads are entirely free from aromatic hydrocarbons and hence, eminently environmentally friendly. All these exceptional characteristics ensure optimal lubri-
cation of plunger and shot sleeve, higher quality castings, an overall improved production. Contact marketing@fochem-

Research Group Eyes Aluminum-Fiber Combinations
Combinations of fiber composites and aluminum are
increasingly needed in lightweight design in order to match local demands with the respective material properties. A major focus in aircraft and automotive construction is on the development of lean, weight-minimized carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)-aluminum combinations that are characterized by a high load-bearing strength and minimum susceptibility to corrosion, while at the same time being cost effective. Te Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology
and Advanced Materials, a research group at the University of Bremen, Bremen, Germany, has set a goal of developing and
