introduced a heavy lubricant or grease in an ill-advised at- tempt to seal the gap. Tis was constantly being pulled into the valve and was often a reason for its failure. Te amount of downtime was uncommonly high. Just a few years ago, if the average diecaster invested in


a vacuum system, the downtime often offset profit. It was unaffordable unless the requirements of his product were so stringent that they couldn’t be satisfied without vacuum. Today, almost any product can be profitably made with a


vacuum-assisted diecasting system. A valve is available that is stronger, has fewer moving parts and requires minimal maintenance. Tis much improved valve is now working very profitably, while supported by a thermally controlled shot sleeve and plunger tip combination that create a secure seal with a minimal amount of a special benign lubricant.


Chill Vents A properly designed copper chill vent with improved


thermal conductivity can increase quality and reduce scrap due to porosity. No additional water cooing is required. Also 20,000 to 40,000 shots can be expected before maintenance is required. A problem that is shared by most diecasters— the unplanned downtime that occurs when casting must be discontinued before the scheduled production run—has been eliminated. Chill vents supplied to Castool by InterGuss have an innovative insert design that provides high thermal conductivity, high wear resistance and high temperature resis- tance that allows a large venting profile, and at the same time guarantees solidification of the aluminum or magnesium. Whatever vacuum method is employed, if it works well,


improved quality and reduced scrap can be guaranteed. Vacuum assisted diecasting is essential to any diecaster who wants to eliminate porosity and wants to make larger, thinner, more complicated parts with less pressure. 


Elkem and Sinojit Sign a Technical Co-operation Agreement Elkem Foundry Products signs a new technical co-opera-


tion agreement with Sinojit, the largest wind energy casting foundry globally. In 2012, the first technical co-operation agreement was


signed after many years of a close working relationship between Elkem and Sinojit During the course of these agreements, both companies


have grown in size and competency and have risen to meet new challenges in large section cast- ing production, such as low tempera- ture impact properties and shrinkage. Te close co-operation has also


generated metallurgical solutions for new alloys such as Solution Strengthen Ferritic Ductile Iron which is starting to become an industry standard for the windmill industry, making both Elkem and Sinojit the leaders in the production technology of these alloys in large section castings. 
