the State Department. The government major traveled with Clinton and helped manage events and serve the press corps. On the road, he had the opportunity to delve into substantive areas such as producing talking points, helping craft press briefings, and working directly with senior diplomats and foreign service officers. "At 25, it was pretty exciting stuff," say Merrill. "Going to Burma in 2011 with the Secretary as the US sought to restore diplomatic relations was a per- sonal highlight."

When Clinton left State in 2013, Merrill was

asked to stay on and join a smaller team as her press secretary. "I was a good fit for the job," he says. "I had been out of the political fray for the past four years, but I think having a fresh per- spective was useful." He has been by her side since then, traveling with her to speeches, on her book tour last summer, and during the midterm elections last fall. Of Clinton, Merrill says, "I love her sense of humor, but what always amazes me is her abili- ty to switch gears. One minute you’re meeting with a group of Fulbright scholarship students, the next you’re in tough negotiations with the Chinese foreign minister. She’s so adept at changing modes while still being able to absorb the moment and stay grounded. It’s a remarkable thing to watch." —PM

The project, housed in the Library of Congress, led Jocelyn to publish a book, Caffè Lena: Inside America’s Legendary Folk Music Coffeehouse, and a companion CD set includes recordings of many artists’ per- formances. Jocelyn returned to campus this spring as the Carr Distinguished Lecturer to discuss her work and give several workshops. John Beckman, director of exhibit design and development at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, was guest speaker at a Skidmore docmentary- studies event, Experiential Storytelling and Science Exhibits, in February.
