FROM LAST TIME
Snake charmer? While Mickey Ravin ’78 thinks the snake handler looks a lot like classmate John Auerbach, it’s actually rattlesnake researcher Bill Brown, now a professor emeritus. Donna Weiss dePasquale ’82 remembers Brown well: “He taught anatomy and physiology my freshman year. He always had a very calm demeanor but could be a little daunting if we were not prepared for class. During one of our first dissection labs, I complained about the odor of the preserving fluid, which I think was formaldehyde. He suggested I move my sta- tion and carry on. Soon I developed huge red blotches on my arms and neck. Immedi- ately concerned, he sent me straight to health services with an escort. And I later found out that he called them to make sure I was all right. Under the stoic exterior, he was a very caring person.” Nancy Martin ’78 says the photo is “most likely his ‘Field Zoology of Ver- tebrates’ course, which I took in 1977.” And she
adds, “Dr. Brown went on to conduct a long-term study of en- dangered timber rattlesnakes in the southern Adirondacks, in- cluding marking and recapturing snakes at their den sites and using radiotelemetry to follow individuals during the summer.” Jerry Rickrode ’86 remembers serving as Brown’s TA. Jonas Hanelin ’87 also recalls Brown and his animal labs, but he laments: “It makes me feel old when I recognize archival pho- tos.” Heidi Roy Hubbard ’90 recognizes Brown’s advanced ani- mal physiology course and adds, “It must have been 1988 or ’89, because I was in that classroom—loved seeing that.” Xenia Sharpe-Williams ’78 guesses the photo shows Brown’s “beloved zoology course.” She says, “I was fortunate enough to take his anatomy and physi - ology class, which was required for all nursing majors. I must say, I loved that class, and Dr. Brown was one of my favorite professors throughout my college experience.”
