RHYTHM MAKERS IN A LAND OF MUSIC AND DANCE

Engaging music styles, compelling fusions and passionate dances are shaped by Brazil’s diverse ethnic heritages and are a rich and integral part of local life for the residents of this colorful country.

SPIRITUAL SOUNDS OF SALVADOR

Drums are at the heart of the Afro-Brazilian culture in the capital city of coastal Bahia where Salvador’s streets double as sound stages for some of the best percussionists in the world. You’ll hear a blend of all kinds of music as you explore this city, but it’s all inextricably connected to the drum. Drums are also key to the worship ceremonies of Salvador’s Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé which marries African beliefs with Catholic influences. You’ll learn all about Candomblé from a local expert before experiencing a hands-on percussion workshop with talented musicians that will really put you in the spirit of the place.

Spend two nights in the charming gold mine town of Ouro Preto

7. SALVADOR’S CULTURAL TRADITIONS Experience a change of pace and scenery as you fly to Salvador this morning. The capital of Bahia is known as the city of music whose pulsating hypnotic rhythms are rooted in the African traditions of Candomblé. Learn about the religious beliefs of Candomblé during a lecture that sheds light on its African voodoo, indigenous American and Roman Catholic influences and visit one of its traditional houses of worship en route to dinner in a restored 19th-century home in the heart of Salvador’s Bohemian district. THE BEAT OF BAHIA

Folkloric footwork comes to life in danceable hybrids, a blending of genres called fusions that often spontaneously play out in the streets. While you may see dancers out and about, Tauck has arranged a private performance by the Bahia Folkloric Dance Company to bring to life authentic dances and music based on the three different influences that formed the Brazilian people: African, from the introduction of slavery in the late 16th century; Indigena, the Brazilian natives; and European, through Portuguese colonization. The performance wows with the entire splendor of the culture, the traditions, the beliefs, the history, the colors, the music, and the movements of the people of Bahia.
