LATIN AMERICA
10. AGRICULTURE TO PRINTING IN HOLGUÍN At La Finca las Y de Calzadilla, an organic orchard in rural Las Tunas, talk to workers about agrarian life in today’s Cuba; meet a local weaver who demonstrates how she crafts lovely hats and bags. In Holguín, meet the Gongora family at Papyrus Papers Publishing House, their family-operated print shop and museum, where they use historic presses to produce art books; interact with family members as they discuss their processes and demonstrate their machines. Continue to your hotel on the Playa Esmeralda coast in Holguín, where you’ll enjoy a Royal Service Room. Meals BLD
11. DISCOVERIES IN VELASCO & GIBARA Head to the village of Velasco for a People-to-People exchange at Casa de la Cultura de Velasco (Centro Cultural Félix Varona Sicilia). This modern community center and gem of contemporary Cuban architecture, designed by Cuban-American architect Walter Betancourt Fernández, is named for the Velasco native who raised funds and materials for its construction. Travel to coastal Gibara; according to legend, Christopher Columbus called the area “the most beautiful land that human eyes saw.” Following lunch at a local paladar with a look at its organic herb garden, visit Gibara’s Natural History Museum to interact with museum staff and local children participating in museum programs. Return to your hotel and bid Cuba a fond adiós at a farewell reception and dinner tonight. Meals BLD
12. RETURN TO MIAMI
After a final morning and lunch in Holguín, return to Miami via your included charter flight, and arrive for an overnight stay at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Meals BLD
