3. GARDEN OF EDEN – NGORONGORO CRATER Experience the Africa of bygone days when you explore the “lost world” of Ngorongoro Crater, considered by many to have been Africa’s original “Garden of Eden.” Within this dormant volcano lie short grasslands, swamps, forests, fresh and saltwater lakes, inspiring continuous animal migration. There is also evidence of an ancient hunter-gatherer culture. From aboard your four-wheel-drive vehicle, you’ll have an opportunity to spot Africa’s renowned Big Five: buffalo, elephant, leopard, the lion and the endangered, rare black rhinoceros, as well as herds of zebras, wildebeests and gazelles. Today’s picnic lunch in the crater will be a highlight of your journey. Meals BLD

4. ANCIENT HISTORY IN OLDUPAI GORGE Start the day with a visit to Oldupai Gorge in the Great Rift Valley, the famed paleoanthropological site studied for decades by Louis and Mary Leakey, where they found prehistoric stone tools, animal bones and fossilized evidence of some of the earliest known upright-walking human species in the area. Enjoy game viewing en route to your lodge in Serengeti National Park; be prepared for bumps and bounces along unpaved roads. But wait until you see your Four Seasons safari lodge – it’s built for pampering and wildlife spotting from the comfort of an elevated open-air deck. Enjoy a barbecue dinner at the lodge’s Boma Grill, with a Maasai cultural performance. Meals BLD

5. ENDLESS PLAINS IN SERENGETI NAT’L PARK Morning and afternoon game drives take you into the golden Serengeti savanna today, one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth able to sustain an abundance of flora and fauna. You may spot numerous prides of lions, zebras, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, black rhinoceros, hippos, buffaloes, jackals, gazelles and primates. Enjoy the evening under the sunset and savor a taste of Pan-African cuisine during a leisurely dinner. Meals BLD

6. KENYA’S AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK Fly to Arusha this morning to explore the sights near Kilimanjaro National Park. Dominating the skyline, majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro peaks over surrounding landscapes at more than 15,000 feet up. We’re headed for Kenya this afternoon for a two-night stay in Amboseli National Park, whose savanna grasslands spread across the Kenya – Tanzania border. Your lodge accommodations are set in a grove of acacia trees, overlooking the plains. Close by, a series of emerald green swamps entice huge numbers of free-ranging elephants, hippos, buffaloes and other game animals. During an afternoon lecture, hear about the plight of the elephants in Amboseli National Park from a local expert. Dinner is at your leisure at the lodge tonight. Meals BLD
