Begin the day with a morning canal cruise for some birding and nature viewing with our local guides, then return to your lodge for lunch. This afternoon, take a boat to explore the village of Tortuguero; learn about the medicinal benefits of coconuts, and the “tree of life” they come from, during a coconut demonstration; and, if you wish, take a canal cruise inside Tortuguero National Park, or just relax at your resort. If you travel with us in July and August, you’ll join us on a special trip to the beach at night for a chance to see endangered green sea turtles making their way out of the sea to lay their eggs on the black sand beach. Blancas River. Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, sloths, iguanas and crocodiles, as well as toucans, herons and kingfishers. Visit a farm family who has lived on the river all of their lives to see what life is really like in a virgin forest, where you have to get by without electricity and the trip to town means traveling by canoe. After lunch, continue to your luxury spa resort, your family’s home for the next two nights. Meals BLD

5. RAINFOREST ZIP LINING & PINEAPPLE FUN Today, get an extraordinary bird’s-eye view of cone-shaped Arenal Volcano on a thrilling zip-line ride* at Sky Trek Adventure Park, where you’ll soar over and through the treetops of the rainforest canopy! (Those not into zip lining can take a nature walk instead.) After lunch at Sky Trek, head off on a pineapple tour on which you’ll taste pineapples fresh from the field, learn how to choose the best pineapple at the supermarket, and sample some local pineapple treats.
