3. COLÓN CEMETERY & HEMINGWAY’S CUBA Walk with a local historian through Havana’s Colón Cemetery, the final resting place of noted Cubanos from all walks of life; containing hundreds of elaborately sculpted memorials, it’s perhaps the most ornate necropolis in the world. Depart the city for Finca Vigía (“Lookout Farm”) in San Francisco de Paula, American novelist Ernest Hemingway’s winter home from 1939 to 1960. See the author’s 9,000-volume library, his yacht, Pilar, and his typewriter, and talk with a docent about Hemingway’s life here. Visit an organic farm with an adjacent paladar for lunch, then return to Havana for a walk along Calle Obispo in Habana Vieja, winding up at the Hotel Ambos Mundos. Make your way up to Room #511, Hemingway’s “first home” in Cuba, where he began work on For Whom the Bell Tolls; memorabilia here prompts an exchange about his time in Havana. Meals BLD

4. HISTORIC HAVANA & THE ARTS Begin today’s People-to-People exchange at Maqueta de La Habana, a museum featuring a 1:500 scale model of Havana. With a local expert, take a guided walking tour through Habana Vieja, the city’s nearly 500-year-old heart; see the beautiful 18th-century Catedral de San Cristóbal, and learn about its ongoing preservation and restoration. At Projecto Muraleando – a barrio community art project featuring murals and sculptures crafted from found items – discuss the project’s impact with its artists and community members who benefit from it. After lunch with ocean views at a paladar on the Malecón, arrive at the home of Habana Compás, a thriving Havana dance and cultural performance group; talk with company members about their mission, and watch a delightful demonstration of their work. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant this evening. Meals BLD

5. CHÉ’S LEGACY IN SANTA CLARA Depart Havana and head to the province of Villa Clara, stopping to meet with local artisans, see their various projects and talk about local enterprise. Arrive at the Ché Guevara Mausoleum in Santa Clara, a memorial sculpture complex and museum honoring Ernesto “Ché” Guevara de la Serna, the Argentine-born physician and Marxist revolutionary who played a key role as Fidel Castro’s second-in-command in the Cuban Revolution; the complex commemorates Ché’s victory in the pivotal 1958 Battle of Santa Clara. Discuss Ché’s life and legacy as you view the monuments and some of his personal effects in the museum, and visit the cave-like memorial crypt containing his remains and those of revolutionaries killed with him while fighting in Bolivia in 1967, marked by an eternal flame. After lunch at a paladar, continue to your hotel on Cayo Ensenachos; have dinner at your choice of the hotel’s restaurants this evening. Meals BLD
