…HELLO 2017! Susan O’Leary, Director of eCommerce ALDERNEY EGAMING

What were the biggest occurrence for you in 2016? This year has been my first full year in the role of Director of eCommerce for the States of Alderney, having previously worked as a lawyer advising the eGambling industry at one of the leading offshore firms. The start of 2016 also saw an internal change at the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) as Jorn Starck, who has worked for the regulator since 2007, moved to the position of Executive Director. Working closely together and combining our experience and specialisms, we have been making sure that

Alderney continues to provide the best possible offering to its licensees. We have been focussed on ensuring the regulation, which already offers an excellent licensing framework, remains fit for purpose and meets the demands of the industry - which involves keeping an ear to the ground for key developments, adding our own touches and having the flexibility to make adjustments when required.

What do you think was the most important occurrence for the industry in 2016? I think this year we’ve seen a huge shift in general across the industry. After a few years of operators and service providers adjusting to increased regulation from local regimes, there seems to be a renewed energy, with everyone looking to push forward and disrupt the sector a bit – it has been an interesting year.

What are you most excited about for the industry in 2017? With the sheer speed of advancement in

technology I’m excited to see how developments will be maximised by the industry next year and particularly how the advances in technology coming out of the developing markets will be embraced. For example, it will be really interesting to see how fintech, payment processing and banking innovations will offer new solutions that can be integrated into the sector, and how businesses will push VR and AR technology to the limits.

What are you most excited about for Alderney in 2017? Next year will be all about cutting through the regulatory red tape and challenging perceptions. Ensuring our regime retains the highest standards of regulation but also that we continue to implement a risk based approach across the board, to ease the burden of regulation and remain competitive so that we to continue to attract new licensees from around the globe.

Anything else you’d like to say about the passing of 2016 and 2017’s arrival?

I think most people would agree that 2016 has been an exceptionally

turbulent year with global, political disruption that nobody could have predicted a year ago. The consequences of such extraordinary shifts are yet to be fully revealed, but I’m confident that the industry is poised to react to all that 2017 has to offer.
