THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

54.5 Hook 16 Length 16.5 Breakpoint Shape DV8: THUG

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Thug was developed to allow bowlers to open up their angles and cover more boards, especially on the backend of the lane,” says Brunswick’s Aaron Koch. “The new Class 13F Reactive cover with the new Thug core allows the Thug to clear the fronts before creating large amounts of hook to recover from steep launch angles.”

Core: The new asymmetric Thug core has an RG of 2.505, which produces a high differential of .052 and an intermediate differential of .015. We saw more than 5 inches of flare with our layouts.

Coverstock: The Thug is wrapped up with the black/orange solid and silver pearl class 13F reactive hybrid. It comes out of the box factory sanded with 500 Siaair and finished with Royal Compound. The effective surface grit is 4700. The RA is 2.71.

Overview: The Thug lives up to his name, as it really pushes the pins around, driving through with a strong continuation motion. On the longer Stone Street pattern, the hybrid coverstock helped cut through the oil and allowed us to open up the lane nicely. We were able to get in around third arrow and have area all the way to the 6-board, according to our CATS. On the USBC Doubles/Singles pattern, the ball gave us enough length to open up our angles and create some recovery with some hold. Strong balls like this often create some over/under reaction, but the Thug created havoc in the pocket. On this pattern, we were about three to four boards left of the Ruckus Schizo (August 2014) at the arrows, and seven boards left at the arrows from the Hooligan. Even on the lighter house pattern, we were able to get in from an extreme deep angle and watch this criminal save its energy for

destroying the pins. For an asymmetrical ball, the Thug pushes down the lane easily. When it comes off the midlane at a later point, it makes a strong move and continues through the pins. This ball complements the Ruckus Feud (February 2014) nicely as a one-two punch for a DV8 arsenal with a lot of hook in two places on the lanes. Bowlers needing a ball with a lot of hook that saves energy down the lane should consider having the Thug in their bag.
