THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

55 Hook 12 Length 13 Breakpoint Shape BRUNSWICK: MASTERMIND INTELLECT

Manufacturer’s Intent: “With its new Honor Roll A+ coverstock, the Intellect will skid longer down- lane with more flip on the backend than the original Mastermind [November 2013],” says Brunswick Product and Marketing Manager, Billy Orlikowski. “It’s the perfect complement to the line.”

Core: The Intellect uses the Mastermind Ultra Low RG core from the original Mastermind and Mastermind Genius (February 2014) to charge it up. It has a low minimum RG of 2.488, a high differ- ential of 0.052 and an intermediate differential of 0.015. We saw around four to five inches of flare.

Coverstock: The black/blue/neon yellow Honor Roll A+ solid reactive cover comes to us sanded with a 500-grit Siaair pad and finished with Royal Compound. The effective surface grit is 4100 and the RA is 4.19.

Overview: The Intellect is a great addition to the Mastermind line, fitting between the original and the Genius. It is a lot cleaner through the front part of the lane than the original and provides a smoother back-end reaction than the Genius. On the Stone Street pattern, it gave us a controlled recovery off the friction to the right, but still rolled up in the oil to drive through the pins with a strong, continuous drive in the backend. My feet were three boards farther left with the Intellect than with the Genius, but the Genius easily gave us more backend. However, I really liked how the Intellect kept its drive through the pins, keeping them low for good carry. On the USBC Doubles/ Singles pattern, we were able to play 13 at the arrows to 8-board at the breakpoint with a good, predictable reaction on the fresh. We were easily able to chase it left with great consistency as the pattern broke down. On the lighter house pattern,

“It is a lot cleaner through the front part of the lane than the original and provides a smoother back-end reaction than the Genius.”

I was forced left. With my not-so-high rev rate, it seemed like the ball needed more oil to save its energy, but adding some polish to the cover might help in this respect. The Intellect was about an arrow more reaction than the Brute (reviewed this month). This is a great ball for all types of bowlers on longer and heavier house patterns, because it really smoothes out the over/under reaction. Lower rev rates get that extra hook they need with predictability, while that same predictability will make high rev rate players love this ball.
