THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

58 Hook 14 Length 15 Breakpoint Shape MOTIV: JACKAL

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Jackal is a power pearl with the unique ability to make an aggres- sive move in the oil, yet retain energy to con- tinue through the pins with deadly force,” says Motiv Vice President, Scott Hewitt. “Because the Jackal is strong in the midlane and retains ener- gy so well for proper continuation, it is a great piece for a wide variety of bowlers. Low to mod- erate rev league bowlers will crush a house shot with it, and tournament bowlers will appreciate the Jackal because it is strong in heavy oil, but doesn’t quit.”

Core: The Predator asymmetric core has an RG of 2.46, a differential of .060 and an interme- diate differential of .015. Our layouts produced a lot of flare — more than five inches. This is the same core used in the Raptor Talon (December 2012).

Coverstock: The new Turmoil HFP (high friction pearl) reactive cover is finished at 3000 LSS. We measured an effective surface grit of 2400 and an RA of 2.41.

Overview: It is nice to see a matte-finished ball that does not burn up when you stand left and throw right. The Jackal provides a clean motion through heavier oil lane conditions, reads the mid- lane well and does not lose its energy on the back- end. On Stone Street, we opened up the lane from around 15 to 17 at the arrows, with a lot of miss room right but good energy at the pins and good carry. I was five boards farther left with my feet and three with my eyes than I was with the Octane (July 2014). On the USBC Doubles/Singles pattern, we could line up from deep inside on the fresh, but the angles were a little extreme to be very suc- cessful at nationals. On the lighter volume house

pattern, it was way too much ball without changing the surface. This is a ball you need in your arsenal for longer patterns with heavy concentrations of conditioner on the lane. It is an easy sell to bowlers needing extra help on oily lanes. Lower rev players will fall in love with the ball, because it gives them the hook they need, along with strong continuation out of the midlane.
