THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

50 Hook 17 Length 16.5 Breakpoint Shape BRUNSWICK: BRUTE

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Brute is the new addition to our All Purpose line,” says Brunswick’s Billy Orlikowski. “Combined with our proven Fortify reactive coverstock and new Low RG, Low Differential core, the Brute will provide maximum length with exceptional backend, punching out the pins on a variety of light to medium oil conditions.”

Core: The Brute Low RG, Low Differential symmetric core has a minimum RG of 2.491 with a differential of .032. We saw about three inches of flare.

Coverstock: The sharp navy solid and light blue pearl Fortify hybrid reactive cover is sanded with a 500 Siaair micropad, followed by Royal Compound and topped off with Royal Shine. The effective surface grit is 5200 and the RA measures 1.48.

Overview: This ball brings a whole new look to Brunswick, especially in the Melee line. The first two Melees (Melee, November 2013, and Melee Cross, July 2014) provided smooth and predictable back-end motion. The Brute, on the other hand, has a new pearlized cover that brings a strong and more angular back-end reaction. This ball still fits into the All Purpose line of the Melees, but complements the earlier balls very nicely. On Stone Street, I was about three to four boards right with my feet than with the Melee Cross. On this pattern, we could play more up the track area, but the longer pattern made our breakpoint a little late for optimum carry. On our lighter house pattern, we were able to strike with ease for a while by playing around 13 at the arrows to 7 at the breakpoint, with hold to the left and recovery off the friction to the right. The carry was impressive. On the USBC Doubles/Singles pattern,

we were able to get lined up on the fresh but experienced some over/under reaction from the angular motion on the backend. Once the lanes opened up, the Brute created a nice reaction to the pocket. This ball is a good choice for bowlers needing length with a strong back-end reaction. It is a great No. 2 choice on lanes where you need the ball to get through the fronts with a strong drive off the breakpoint.
