Chiltern Railways Joint Top DFT Franchise in National Rail Passenger Survey

By Lucy Evans Marketing Manager

Efforts to restore lost canal are underway

An organisation which is hoping to restore one of Birmingham’s long lost canals is asking local businesses to step forward and help with the project. The waterway is the Dudley No2, which ran from Selly

Oak to Halesowen, a distance of five miles. The canal opened in 1798, and its main purpose was carrying coal from Dudley to Worcester, bypassing Birmingham. The canal gets its name from the two mile long Lapal

tunnel, which is under Woodgate Valley. The roof of this collapsed in 1917, and the canal never reopened. Since then, the Lapal Canal Trust and others have

been working to restore the canal, and some important work has been carried out, including the renovation of a section by Dudley Council two decades ago, and reconstruction of a bridge by Birmingham City Council. The canal trust has also carried out a lot of work on

the waterway, and its next project is a summer restoration programme, which will take place between 29 July and 5 August. The work will include repairing a canal side wall at Harborne Wharf and clearing a further large section of the canal, with the main job being to remove two tree stumps which have damaged the waterway wall.

Passengers have rated Chiltern Railways as the UK’s joint top DFT franchise operator when it comes to overall customer satisfaction, with a score of 91% in Transport Focus’ National Rail Passenger Survey (NRPS). Chiltern also scored joint top of the DFT franchises for satisfaction with trains (90%) and satisfaction with stations (89%). The National Rail Passenger

Survey which is commissioned by the independent consumer watchdog Transport Focus, represents the views of over 100,000 rail passengers on a broad spectrum of issues such as overall satisfaction and satisfaction with 30 specific aspects of service. Passenger opinions of network-wide train services are collected twice a year from a representative sample of journeys. Chiltern Railways Managing

Director, Dave Penney, said: “We are delighted that passengers have rated Chiltern as the UK’s top DFT franchise for overall satisfaction. What is even more pleasing is that we are also at the top of the table for satisfaction with our trains and our stations. The findings reinforce our commitment to providing a high quality passenger experience.”

54 CHAMBERLINK May 2017 Canal trust chairman Terry Stanton said: “This is a

substantial project with significant health and environmental benefits, and is an opportunity for companies to demonstrate their interest in supporting something which will benefit the community for the next 200 years.”

New Eurowings routes take off

Eurowings is to launch a new twice-weekly service from Birmingham to Salzburg. The low-cost German carrier – which already

operates flights from the Second City to Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Vienna – will launch the new route on 9 December, catering for skiing fans and city breakers. All services are planned with a 174-seater A320

aircraft. The Wednesday service will arrive from the Austrian

city at 9am and depart Birmingham at 9.40am. The Saturday service arrives from Salzburg at 1.05pm

and departs Birmingham at 1.45pm. William Pearson, aviation director for Birmingham

Airport, said: “It’s fantastic to see Eurowings expanding its list of routes from Birmingham Airport so rapidly.

“Salzburg is a great ski destination but also a great

city break city which we are sure will make this route very popular indeed with our passengers all year round.” Eurowings is headquartered in Cologne and serves a

network of domestic and European destinations as well as some long-haul routes. Ivan Orec, manager network development and

airport relations for Eurowings, said: “We are pleased to add a new Salzburg route to our Birmingham schedule, which will operate twice weekly, every Wednesday and Saturday, starting from the beginning of December. “We are also looking forward to bringing more ski

passengers to Salzburg and offer them free of charge transport of their ski equipment.”
