Dragon boats set

to return to Brum A team from Birmingham Chamber is to once again contest the city’s annual dragon boat race at Brindleyplace on 24 June. The 11-strong team will be raising funds for

Cure Leukaemia. It is hoped that the event as a whole will raise more than £70,000 for the charity. The race will also see Chamber chief executive

Paul Faulkner and Cure Leukaemia’s Geoff Thomas renew their (friendly) rivalry, with the former laying down the gauntlet to the ex- Wolves star by saying: “We’ll see you on the water my friend!” It will be the 18th time that the race has been

Sutton Coldfield gears up for inaugural expo

Sutton Coldfield is to have its own business ‘expo’ for the first time. The Royal Business Fair –organised by the

Sutton Coldfield Chamber of Commerce – will make its debut at the town’s Ramada Hotel on Friday 2 June. The event is set to feature more than 400

delegates and 30 exhibition stands. There will also be a seminar from the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership and a speed networking session. Sutton Coldfield Chamber president Nigel

Waldron said: “We are delighted that Sutton Coldfield is to have its own business fair. “Over the last 12 months we have seen a lot of

new companies arriving in the town, adding to an already thriving business community. “We look forward to seeing them come together

under one roof to showcase their businesses and hopefully make some new contacts.”

Chamber chief executive Paul Faulkner said:

“Since the Sutton Coldfield Chamber launched just over 18 months ago we have been bowled over by the response from the town’s business community. “The Royal Business Fair will provide a

fantastic opportunity to showcase the depth and quality of businesses in Sutton Coldfield. "It is also a chance to build upon similarly

successful events we have held elsewhere in the region that have received fantastic feedback from businesses which have exhibited and attended." Delegates can attend the event for free, while

there are a number of packages available for exhibition stands and event brochure advertising.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available. To find out more email Julia Gray at j.gray@suttoncoldfield-chamber.com

Looking after number one: the Chamber team in last year’s race

staged on the canals at Brindleyplace – each team has to race another along a 200 metre stretch of waterway. Each team will have ten paddlers, and a drummer, who will be there to help synchronise the rowers. Dragon boat racing is an increasingly popular

sport – dragon boats originate from the Pearl River Delta region in China, and were made out of teak. The history of racing in southern China goes back more than 2,000 years, and today there is even a world championship event.
