‘The best way to predict your future.....is to create it’

How did I end up here? A business owner asks himself Everywhere, these days, somebody is talking about Strategy. A generation ago, strategy was for the public company, now, perhaps

partly driven by the growth of private equity or ubiquitous MBA’s, private businesses should have a strategy! Many private businesses do not achieve the aspirations of their owners;

often because there is no direct link between the desired outcomes and the activities that are undertaken by management. There is no strategy. Your business does not have to suffer in this way. There are companies that still do not prepare a budget at the start of the

year; and more who do not compare performance to budget. There are more still, who do not amend their activities if performance is off plan adversely. They have no map, no plan.

But what is a strategy? “Good strategy is not just “what” you are trying to do. It is also the “why” and “how” you are doing it.” (Richard Rumelt) Experience has shown that frequently there is no clear vision of what the

owners are trying to achieve and no way of assessing whether these ambitions are achievable either within the chosen market or consequent to chosen management actions.

Abraham Lincoln

Management have little time for strategy, yet it is critical to think about

where you are, where you are going and how you get there. Think about this: how will you maximise your exit equity value? Many years of equity creation could be locked up inside your business;

have you a strategy to unlock that value at some date in the future? In business, most changes to actions are a result of a diagnostic process

that changes the stasis of the business. So, do something different. Review your strategy. In this fast-changing economic environment, there is no time to lose. If you want to maximise your equity release at exit, know how to achieve it. Devise strategy that draws power from focussing minds, energy and

action; channel that focus to produce a flow of favourable outcomes. Good strategy and good organisation lie in specialising on the right activities and imposing only the essential amount of coordination.

Search out for that focus and create your future.
