New app will keep locals informed of roadworks
A new smart phone app which will alert Staffordshire people to roadworks disruption has been launched. The ‘Roadzwork’ app currently
works just for Staffordshire but is set to be rolled out elsewhere. The app has resulted from a
pilot project funded by Innovate UK, which is part of the Government Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy. Stoke-based Beepz won the contract to develop the app. Staffordshire County Council’s head of
highways James Bailey said: “The ‘Roadzwork’ app could make a big difference to people’s day-to-day journeys and we’re pleased to see it piloted here in Staffordshire. “We do all we can to inform people in
advance of any of our works, but delays can also be caused by emergency utility works, incidents and public events.
36 CHAMBERLINK May 2017 “People usually check and plan if they’re
going on a longer or unfamiliar journey, but tend to just head straight out on familiar routes they use most days. This app will alert people straight away, meaning they can allow extra time or use an alternative route. “We will always look to use
emerging technologies to help people feel less disruption to their daily lives. Having a local business develop this app is also a bonus.”
Beepz’ James Manning said: "We know that
roadworks or incidents on our roads can cause frustration, so we have developed a solution which will make people’s daily journeys easier. We have been working closely with the county council and its partners who are keen to use the latest technology to improve life for residents. As a Staffordshire company it is great to be able to pilot the app here before expanding it to other areas."
doing so growing the business and the ability to take on additional staff. “We have received assistance throughout the
process from the economic development team who have been extremely supportive. I would encourage any business to contact the team to learn more.”
Business parks to
bring in new jobs New developments are being planned for Staffordshire business parks as the county looks to focus on creating higher value jobs. Staffordshire County Council says there are
investment opportunities at developments at Redhill Business Park in Stafford and Kingswood Lakeside in Cannock. Both sites were developed by the county
council and are flourishing. Redhill is home to American manufacturing giant General Electric, who are planning to expand, while Kingswood Lakeside has attracted firms such as Veolia and Hellermann Tyton. County council economic growth leader Mark
Winnington said: “We are expecting imminent development announcements at both Kingswood Lakeside and Redhill which will further boost already thriving business parks. “This is more good news for Staffordshire at a
time when we’re continuing to see record low unemployment. Our focus on supporting the creation of better paid jobs means attracting new investment from home and abroad. There is a great deal of confidence in Staffordshire and we will build on that to ensure it remains a great place to do business.”
