for charity race A 100-mile closed road cycle race, Velo Birmingham, which is to be held in the city on 24 September will feature a huge team from Cure Leukaemia. The 800-strong team will be taking to

the road during blood cancer awareness month. The 800 will include a number of famous faces, including former England and Wolves star Geoff Thomas, his former team- mates Mark Bright and John Salako, and current England U-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd, as well as West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster. All funds raised from this event will go

towards Cure Leukaemia’s £1m Appeal in 2017 to fully fund the £3.2m expansion of the Centre for Clinical Haematology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. This transformational project will double

the internationally significant centre’s capacity for patients, clinical trials and staff as well as allowing stem cell transplants to be performed as an outpatient for the first time. Cure Leukaemia co-founder Professor

Charlie Craddock, who is also riding Velo Birmingham said: “Everyone cycling for Cure Leukaemia will be raising funds for a truly transformational project. Not only will the expanded Centre immediately increase the number of lives saved but also hasten global progress towards establishing effective treatments for all blood cancers within 25 years.” Baggies ‘keeper Ben Foster said: "It is no

secret that I am a big cycling fan and I am really looking forward to riding Velo Birmingham for Cure Leukaemia. It is going to be an amazing event and I

would encourage anyone interested in taking part to contact Cure Leukaemia and join our team. It is a fantastic, regional charity.”
