Sharing the city’s stories
An exhibition is been staged to celebrate the Irish contribution to the building of modern Birmingham and capture the stories of those involved. The project, co-ordinated by Chamber member the Birmingham Irish Association, includes 35 oral histories of the men and women that came to the Midlands from Ireland to work in the city from the 1950s. The stories vary from the construction of buildings such as the Rotunda, the National Exhibition Centre, the Bull Ring and the infamous motorway interchange dubbed ‘Spaghetti Junction’. Included in the project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, are a number of fascinating photographs from the era, included the one reproduced here, which shows the ‘Spaghetti Junction’ workforce. The exhibition, ‘We Built This City – In Our

been made about the contribution of the Irish workers, produced by Jay Bond, who said: “This has been a fascinating project, and it has become

a real labour of love to be honest. It’s been humbling to hear people’s stories, and to know what they did for this city and future generations. It’s been a real eye-opener. “It’s remarkable to think how well-trodden the
route from Ireland to Birmingham has been, and this project is important and poignant social history. It has been an absolute privilege to meet so many wonderful characters in the process.”
Solihull Chamber was one of a number of key backers of the town’s recent ‘Super Network Showcase’. The event brought together local companies
and organisations at Hogarths Hotel, Solihull, to promote themselves and meet like-minded colleagues from the business community. Keynote speaker at the event was Chamber
president and Birmingham Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe. The event also included a Dragons’ Den style-event, Dragons’ Lair, compered by Free Radio Coventry and Warwickshire presenter ‘JD’.
