The newly formed Midlands Engine is to lead a delegation which will be attending one of the world’s most prestigious biotechnology and pharmaceutical events this summer. The event is the BIO 2017 International


Convention, which will take place in San Diego between 19-22 June. The convention attracts thousands of

The Department for International Trade (DIT) West Midlands has launched a new programme to help companies start exporting. The programme is Kick Start, which is kick-


starting itself with three workshops designed to demonstrate to businesses how trading overseas would benefit them and help them expand. These are free events in May – two will be


held at the NMC Centre in West Bromwich, while the third will be at the Custard Factory in Birmingham. The West Bromwich workshops are being


hosted by international strategy and marketing expert John Harrison, from JH Market Strategy, and entrepreneur Angela Maxwell, director of Acuwoman, will take the lead in Birmingham. For more details about the DIT Kick Start

Dozens of companies from across the West Midlands are on the first stages of exporting to countries across Africa, after experts travelled from the continent to offer their advice. Organised by the Department for


International Trade (DIT) West Midlands, the Winning Business in African Markets programme included talks from specialists from Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria. Delegates were also able to discuss potential


export opportunities via Skype with trade advisers in Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa and Ethiopia at the event at the GTG Training Academy in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton. Mark Sankey, head of the Chamber-based


international trade team, said: “Africa’s consumer-facing industries are expected to grow by more than £260 billion by 2020 and ‘Brand Britain’ is already held in high regard for its quality, tradition and style.”

New company helps budding exporters


Birmingham-based manufacturer Armagard has launched a separate company, ExportWorldwide.com, to help guide SMEs through the potential minefield of earmarking new export markets across the globe. Bosses at the Kitts Green company describe ExportWorldwide.com as an ‘online marketing channel that enables enterprises to promote products and services to international audiences in 20 languages that account for 84 per cent of world trade and a 16 trillion dollar export market. The vision is to empower small and medium enterprises to double their exports’. Mark Neal, managing director of Armagard,


said exports had been key to the growth of the privately-owned firm, which has won a prestigious Queens Award for International Trade and a UK Exporter of the Year award after growing export sales from six per cent to almost 70 per cent despite facing two recessions. The company specialises in enclosures for


display screens and other equipment used in challenging environments. Mark said: “Exports are a great market for us.


Of course the UK is also such a great market – if you are competitive in the UK, you are going to be competitive in other markets. But companies may have lots of customers worldwide and one big customer with the UK and if that UK market gets into problems then you can lose a large part of your business. “ExportWorldwide.com is there to provide


help and support for SMEs which want a low-risk and cost-effective entry into export markets.”


The Armagard initiative was officially launched


less than a year ago in mid-2016. After two years of development and beta testing, the marketing channel welcomed its first user in May 2016.
